Today's Children Are Our Future

Today’s children are our future. These wacky toddlers–the ones playing dress up and tee ball today–are the legacy that we collectively leave. We’re not responsible to our bosses, our clients or our neighbors–we’re really responsible, or we should be, to these children. And it just takes a few small changes, done at your own pace, to make big differences in these kids’ lives.

My business partner, Michelle Lamar, is an ambassador for Healthy Child, Healthy World, which is a non-profit on a mission to inspire parents to protect young children from harmful chemicals.

But it’s really about more than just chemicals. And about being eco-friendly. It’s about getting back to a time when the things that surrounded children, they things they ate, slept on and played with, were real.

A Wake-Up Story from Healthy Child Healthy World on Vimeo.

I loved the video. And love the message even more. All it takes is a start – and a group of people who want to make a difference. Together we can inspire. Together we can ignite. Together we can advocate. And together we can affect change.

I’m in. How about you?

P.S. If you’d like some resources on how to get started, Janelle Sorenson, Senior Editor and Research Director at Healthy Child created this Cheat Sheet of NonToxic Tips and Eco-Wisdom, which I would not have known about were it not for Heather and Whitney at Rookie Moms. It’s a great resource to get you on your way.

  • Great post Shelly and the vid is wonderful. I feel like everyday I have to protect my kids from toxic products. It's a never ending battle and to me, very scary. Thanks for the resource link and talking about this subject. We owe it to our kids.

  • Loved it!! Always trying to be a good Mom and this article nailed it!! Maybe it's because the world is so overwhelming but I do feel I can make a difference in my children's lives! Awesome article and thank you for sharing!!

  • Hangers Cleaners

We couldn't agree more! As parents we are the ones closet to our children… hugging & holding them. Most of us don't think about what we are wearing or how it was “cleaned” whether at home or the dry cleaners. Fact: most dry cleaners use perchloroethylene “perch” which has been proven a carcinogine (can even be breathed in) and a ground water contaminant. Please, if you do use a dry cleaning service make sure they do not use “perch”! Hangers Cleaners in Kansas City is the MOST eco-friendly using CO2, GreenEarth & wet cleaning methods to leave your clothes clean, soft and with no FUNKY dry cleaning smell. Sorry for the pitch at the end…but it's true!

Thanks, Joyce. I feel the same way :))

Thanks Francis. And yes, we can all make a difference – one step at a time. Let's keep reminding ourselves of that, okay? Thanks for stopping by :))

I agree — and don't even mind the “pitch” … because you are right! Thanks for stopping by – and for contributing. And you've reminded me that I need to switch dry cleaners!

  • I'm in!! I'm trying very hard to help create great communities and great leaders for tomorrow! 🙂
